"Unfinished Business: Brain Development & Traumatic Stress in Transition-age Youth"
Tuesday November 13, 2012 from 10:00am - 11:00am Pacific, 1:00pm - 2:00pm Eastern Time
Integrating neuroscience research findings into programs for transition-age youth is crucial for designing and delivering effective services. Just as emerging adults are transitioning across systems, their brains and minds are continuing to develop. Indeed, the final stages of the brain’s structural and functional development are not complete until individuals reach their mid-to-late 20s.
Researchers have also recently identified the significant ways that the developing brain and body are shaped by adversity, specifically, the role of traumatic or toxic stress. A substantial number of youth needing, seeking, or receiving services have been affected by traumatic stress.
This webinar gave participants a foundational understanding of brain development and the neurobiology of traumatic stress, as well; a young adult’s personal experience of traumatic stress was shared.
Presenters:
- Julie Rosenzweig, Professor of Social Work at Portland State University.
- Jennifer Gerlachanet, College student at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and founder of Active Minds at SIUE.

"What's Normal? The Value of the Developmental Lens in Working with Transition-Aged Youth with Mental Health Challenges"
Tuesday August 7, 2012 from 10:00am - 11:00am Pacific, 1:00pm - 2:00pm Eastern Time
This webinar introduced the developmental perspective as one way of thinking about transition-aged youth with mental health challenges as a special case of "emerging adults." Developmental psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Arnett introduced the term "emerging adults" in 2000 as a way to make sense of the time young people spend exploring before fully committing to adulthood. This new, normative trend in the way young people become adult redefines what is normal and identifies new criteria for achieving a successful transition to adulthood. What does this mean for transition youth with serious mental health conditions?
Participants were introduced to the latest theory and empirical research on development between ages 18 and 29. The webinar also explored distinctions between developmental vs. mental health challenges during emerging adulthood. Last, we discussed the value of the developmental lens as a framework for designing and implementing services that best fit the distinct needs of in between transition-aged youth with mental health challenges.
