New Focal Point on Trauma-Informed Care

Understanding the pervasiveness of trauma and the harm it causes presents new opportunities for those who work with and care for youth and young adults. Focal Point 2015 is dedicated to Trauma-Informed Care – from neurobiology to public policy – and it is available to read online today.

Webinar: Addressing Homelessness Among Youth Aging Out of Foster Care

Date/Time: Tuesday June 2, 2015, 10am - 11am PST / 1pm - 2pm EST

Jennifer Blakeslee, PhD will present a social network support perspective on the growing problem of homelessness for youth aging out of foster care. Dr. Blakeslee will also discuss possible future policy changes and make intervention recommendations to bolster the informal social support networks of foster youth.

This spring, millions of high school seniors will face the prospect of heading off to college in the fall. This article recommends preparing teens for independence in the months leading up to their departure. It gives some concrete things for supportive adults for focus on, especially with youth who have ongoing mental health challenges.

A systematic review of prevention programs involving over 10,000 college-aged students shows positive outcomes for mental health. Programs helped all students – not just ones experiencing mental health challenges – to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Other results showed enhancement of protective factors.
